In response to the urgent need for ventilators during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Technological Institute of the Philippines-QC, funded by PCIEERD, designed a mechanical ventilator called SiglaVent. It is designed to operate as temporary breathing assistance while the patient is in transit or in-queue until an ICU ventilator becomes available; a helpful apparatus for patients with severe COVID-19 conditions. Its design focuses around the principle of manual resuscitator bags to deliver the tidal volume.
Testing was done in EPDC to assure that its product would not be harmful for public use. The tests include visual, mechanical and functional conditions to assure the proper functionality of the device. Product safety test, EMC Radiated Emission test (CISPR 11), EMC Radiated Immunity test (IEC61000-4-3) and Electrostatic Discharge-ESD (IEC61000-4-2) are also included in the test requirements. After the tests here in EPDC, the SiglaVent will undergo medical health standard tests to assure that it will meet hospital health standards.
EPDC hopes that SiglaVent will not only give ‘Sigla’ but also hope that we, Filipino people, are united in this pandemic .
